FAQs

Alternative Power Systems LLC

  • What types of generators do you install and service?

Our company can install and service a wide range of generator brands. For residential installations, we focus on Generac because we are well-trained, certified for installation, repair, and warranty, and prefer the reliability, versatility, and capabilities of Generac's lineup. For commercial and industrial applications, we have access to a wide range of brands of equipment to fit specific conditions and requirements. For both sectors, we have access to propane, natural gas, diesel, and gasoline options.
  • Do you offer free consultations or estimates?

We provide complimentary on-site consultations and comprehensive estimates to assist clients in selecting the most appropriate generator for their specific requirements. What's great about us is that we are your one-stop shop for all things backup power. We can install, maintain, and repair your system for the life of the system. We have a service department that focuses on maintenance and repair, and flexible service contracts to make sure your needs are met, whatever they are.
  • How do I know what size generator I need?

Sizing a generator can be a tricky job because it can be so varied. The majority of our consultations will start with, "Tell me what you want an outage to look like in your home." From there, we can talk about options and move up or down in price, making sure that you know what you're getting, and finding a system that fits your budget. We take pride in never upselling you things that you don't need.
  • Do you handle permits and inspections?

We manage all necessary permitting processes and coordinate required inspections to ensure your generator installation complies with local regulations and building codes.
  • How long does generator installation take?

The majority of our residential installations are completed in two days. Day 1 is a "Prep" day where we will install the gas lines, put them under pressure, and call in for preliminary inspections. Day 2 is the electrical, equipment placement, final connections, and cleanup. Power will be out in the home for the majority of this day. Though this is the most common schedule, it can often vary based on the complexity and scope of your project, or, let's be honest, the temperamental weather of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Do you offer maintenance plans?

We provide customizable maintenance programs designed to ensure your generator operates reliably throughout the year, tailored to your specific needs.
  • What happens during a power outage?

This depends on the type of system you have! For most standby generator systems, you'll have a few-second delay before the generator fires up automatically, then a few seconds for warmup before your gen starts powering the home. So about a 15-second delay from lights off to lights on. For critical systems, we can also integrate a battery system to take up that interim, so you don't even know your power has gone out until you look out the window and everyone else is dark.
  • Can you upgrade or replace an old generator?

Generators definitely have a lifespan of reliability. Generally, expect about 20-30 years from your machine. When it's time to replace the generator, costs are often a lot less because we can re-utilize existing infrastructure, as long as it still adheres to today's building codes.
  • Do you offer emergency repair services?

We have a line where you can reach an on-call technician at any time, day or night. Since we are a small company, you'll be ringing one of our techs, not an answering service. We can dispatch a tech to you or offer tech support over the phone to get your lights back on, depending on the circumstances.
  • Are financing options available?

We offer various financing options to make generator installation and upgrades more accessible and affordable for our clients.
